Hiking the AT in Boiling Springs

Our hike on the Appalachian Trail to South Mountain and Center Point Knob began in the town of Boiling Springs at the site of the old Carlisle Iron Works Furnace. 

For nearly a mile the AT literally zig-zags through farm fields.

Along the trail up South Mountain are pits where they used to dig into the ground to gather the iron ore for the furnace.

After a gradual climb (and an increase in clouds) we reached the summit.

At the summit is "Center Point Knob" which used to be the center of the Appalachian Trail when it was originally constructed in the 1930s.

After getting back to parking and having a picnic, the kiddies gathered corn from the fields and fed it to the ducks at the lake!
